'this information constitutes the report detailing the results of the Soil Cbaraotarization Plan (SCP)
for Subarea 3 (Evaporation Pond No. 9) at the Fruits Refinery, submitted in accordance with Paragraph 28 0£
Compliance Order No. 98-06-Oi-01 (the Order) for the site:
• "Soil Characterization Data for Evaporation Pond #9", October 29, 2001, proparedbyMesa
Ertvironraeatal, Inc., and received by the Division November 5, 2001; sad
• Analytical Reports from ACZ Laboratories, Inc.: Project Numbers L33514, L33414, L33511, L33507,
and L33402.
Re to
The data iai~'cate the following;
High concentrations of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPA) compounds (maximtun levels of 120,000
mg/!Sg) are preset is the soil (from approximately 0 to 6-12 feet below grade) in the northern half of
Subarea 3. 'T'his contamination corresponds to taz, pitch, gileonite, and otherwise black-stained soil as
visually identified m many of the soil coree during drilling, and is generally present in the clayey/silty
overburden above the water table, This general azea of contamination is shown in Attachment I,
No VOCs (EPA method 8260) were detected in the soil samples above appiiaable Soil Remediation
Objecfivea (SROs) with the exception of 242 ug/ltg benzene in boring SB-10, exceeding the'SRO of 170
1ig/kg -far soil concentration protective of groundwater.
SVOC (EPA method 8270) results for soil were inconclusive due to greatly elevated method detection
limits due to sample dilution as a result of the high TPH concentrations sud matrix interferences.
