Because the mining system is a conventional room and pillar plan, sets
of rooms will be driven at 90° from the main entries. Each set of room
entries or panels will be separated from the adjacent panels and the
main entries by a barrier of coal as shown on the Mine Plan Map (Map 8).
These pillars will be left between each panel and the main entries but
will be later recovered upon pillar retreat from the mine.
In order to visualize the overall room and pillar method of mining, a
diagram showing the room dimensions is found on the Mine Plan Map
(Map 8).
The anticipated annual and total production of coal from the A Coal Seam
is shown in Table 5, Projected Coal Production.
By continued utilization of the existing portals of the Peacock Coal
Mine, Sunbelt proposes increased recovery of reserves and minimal
surface disturbance. The main entries will be oriented to parallel the
• old workings with the panels oriented parallel or perpendicular to the
property boundaries. This orientation, as shown on the Mine Plan Map
(Map 8), will result in a more recovery of reserves of the A Coal Seam
during the coal extraction process.
The main entries will run parallel to one another and will be separated
by blocks of coal called pillars. The drift entries will begin with a
minimum number of portal entries then expand to a five (5) main entry
system, in order to improve mining and ventilation. The main pillars
which separate these entries will be designed to provide support over
the life of the mining of the A Coal Seam; they are projected at
60-foot centers. The width of the mine openings will be kept at
approximately 18 to 20 feet throughout mining operations. The main
entries will serve as the lifeline of the mining operation, providing
access for the supplies, water piping, haulage, power, ventilation and
support services.

2.05-3
