• Immediately after the areas have been graded, but prior to the actual
seeding of the area, stabilization of the area will be accomplished by
spreading a straw mulch at a minimum rate of 2,000 pounds per acre. The
best alternative for this mulch will be a native grass hay. This mulch
will not be moldy or rotten. Sunbelt will avoid using cereal grain
mulches unless absolutely nothing else is available. If a cereal grain
mulch is used, the mulch will be free of weed seeds.
Following completion of the mining, the access road will be mulched and
seeded with the mixture shown on Table 7, Proposed Seed Mixture.
Planting and Seeding Methods. Once the area has been rough graded, a
straw mulch will be surface blown onto all graded areas. Next the area
will be disked to anchor the mulch and prepare a mellow, yet firm seed
bed. Following the mulching and disking, the area will be seeded with
the perennial mixture as shown in Table 7, Proposed Seed Mixture. On
steeper slopes, seed will be broadcast using a cyclone seeder at twice
• the drill seed rate. On level areas, all seed will be drill seeded with
a rangeland drill pulled by a rubber-tired farm tractor or small crawler
dozer. Seed coverage on areas broadcast seeded will be accomplished by
disking where possible and by the freeze-thaw action of these roughened
soils as they receive moisture from fall and winter storms.
During the early spring following summer planting, the containerized or
bare root tree plantings, as shown in Table 8, Seedling Transplants,
will be hand-planted into the new seeding. Hand shovels and/or augers
will be used to transplant these species. Planting during this period
will result in minimal damage to the seeded vegetation and lessens the
potential mortality that can be expected when seedlings are transplanted
into stands having a more developed root system.

2.05-33
