• The preceding pit inflow analyses determined that the highest pit inflows for both the
Overburden and Wadge Coal aquifers will occur in the year 2001. Therefore, drawdown
distances were calculated for the year 2001 as well as for the life of the mine (13
years).
The summarized results of the drawdown calculations are shown in Table 17-4, The largest
estimated radial distance will occur in the Overburden aquifer where a one-foot drawdown
is predicted to occur 1,554 feet from the mined area after 13 years of pit inflows.
One-foot drawdown radial distances are shown on Exhibit 17-1. Since the Overburden and
Wadge Coal aquifers crop out to the east, there will be no drawdowns as a result of pit
inflows in this direction.
It is anticipated that the extent of pit inflow induced drawdowns will be less than
predicted by the above exercise. The calculations are based on artificial, constant
pumping rates that cause maximum drawdowns so that worst-case scenarios are presented.
The Theis equation does not account for aquifer recharge which would reduce drawdowns. In
addition, the Overburden aquifer is unconfined; the Theis method, which is for confined
• aquifers, will predict larger drawdowns when applied to an unconfined aquifer.
As can be seen when Exhibit 17-1 is compared with Exhibit 16-1, "Water Rights", Temple
Well No. 1 is located within the Overburden one-foot drawdown contour. This well has been
removed by mining-related activities, and Peabody has agreed to replace this well with
another well producing water of equal or greater quality and quantity. No other wells
will be affected by pit inflow induced drawdowns.
Potential Mining Impacts on Local Water Rights. Complete descriptions of the surface and
ground water rights, as well as unrighted water sources within and approximate to the
Seneca 11-W complex, are contained in Tab 16, "Water Rights and Alternative Water
Supplies". Table 16-1 provides investigated water rights information and Exhibit 16-1
depicts the location of righted and unrighted water sources. Appendix 16-1 contains the
"Referee's Ruling" for three water rights secured by Peabody. Attachment 16-A contains a
consultant's report detailing the study of water rights in the Seneca II-W vicinity and
the augmentation plans for water supplies and rights in the mine area. Attachment 16-8
contains aneth er consultant's report detailing the study of long-term effects of pumpage
. from Peabody Seneca II-W Well No. 1.
11
