~i

•
Appentllz i.3-4; Drilling, Completion, end Sampling Techniques
Drilling and Mell Completion
Description of the shallor hole drilling end completion can be
found In Appentllz 3.3-3.
Bedrock holes ^ere Core drilled to depth, using synihetlic
drilling muds end occasionally, only water, During times o+
lost clrculnt ion, bentonite mud and lost circulation material
rare used. The notes rare then ge oDhyslcelly logged. Tne
completion strings consisted of a section of pert ore+e0
(1 /4-inch holes on 1 foot centersl 1-Inch steel pipe, a 30-inch
Inf letiDle packer, end 1-Inch steel pipe to the surface. All
pipe lengths were meeeured t0 the nearest .D1~ to insure that
the packer ras placed et the desiretl Interval. A calculate0
volume of cement was then placed Dy use of a tremmie DiDe by
upward displacement. The packers remained Inflated until ine
Cement plug had set. All cement plugs were verified by use of
the iremmie pipe for tagging.
In the case of SK-3H, cement could not De placed rlin any
certainty because o1 the hole being horixontel, In this Hole,
two DaCkers rare Installed t0 provide monlfOring of three 20ne5.
A pressure regulator is being USed t0 melntdin pressure in the
packers. Tne peckers have remaine0 Inf toted 90f Of the time
during the last 2 years. Ne have had problems rich the brass
fittings expanding end contracting severely during the spring
and fall and deflating ine packers for short time periods.
These deflation times are Indicated on the data sheets.
Sampling
All nonfloring rolls rare develOpetl rith air upon Completion.
Floring rolls rare alloyed fo tree 41or for several hours,
removing many tens of casing volumes. Tro to three casing
volumes rare removed rlth a PVC bailer (nonfloring yells), when
practical, prior to sampling. All containers, Inclutling the
bailer rare rinsed rlth the rater to De sampled and distilled
rater betreen sampling sites. Callbretetl pH entl conductivity
meters end thermometer rare used to measure field parameters at
each site. A 100 fiberglass tape rlih a plopper ras used to
measure rater levels to the nearest .01~. The Collected rater
sample ras field filtered through .45 micron membranes end
placed In sample bottles, containing acid preservatives
supplied Dy the lab (one nitric, one sulphuric, one blank).
These bottles rare then plated In en tCe chest to maintain
temperatures Just above freezing. Samples rare delivered to the
lab for analysis rltnln 24 to 36 hours otter removef 7rom the
ground.
Analyses have Deen performed Dy Industrial Lebs of Denver during
the entire project. Industrial Lebs uses EPA accepted testing
•
