Introduction
The Raton Creek Mine permit area is located in Starkville, Los Animas County,
Colorado, approximately three miles south of Trinidad. The site is in the
foothills of the Rocky Mountains and consists of hilly terrain cut by deep gulches.
The elevation of the site ranges from 6,340 to 7,200 feet.
A vegetation survey was conducted on the permit area from 12-19 July 1982. Two
vegetation types were identifed on the permit area during the survey.
The most abundant vegetation type is pinyon-juniper, covering approximately
95 percent of the permit area. This type is found on all aspects of the hills of
the permit area. The understory varies from sparse grasses to dense brush.
The other vegetation type, refered to as bottomland, is found at the bottom of the
hills on the western edge of the permit area and covers approximately 5 percent.
This vegetation type appears to have been a grassland originally Most of this
type which was on the permit area has been disturbed in the past. The area which
was sampled is located just west of the permit area boundary at the site of a former
residential area of Starkville. Although buildings have long since disappeared,
the disturbance has resulted in a flora which is typical of disturbed areas.
A list of plant .species observed on the Raton Creek Mine permit area is found in
Table 1. Several species could be identified only to genus because of a lack of
flowers or fruits needed for species identification.
Methods
permit Map No. 8 is a~l" = 400' scale map of the study area, showing vegetation
types and sample locations within the pinyon-juniper vegetation type. permit
Map No. 9 is a 1" = 200' scale map showing sample locations within the bottomland
vegetation type. permit Map No, 1o is an aerial photograph of the permit area,
showing the approximate boundaries of the permit area. The photograph is distorted
and therefore not appropriate for use in indicating sample locations.
219
Revised 5/93
