I COLORADO DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT, Water Qua[iry Control Division
' Rationale -Page 2, Permit No. CO-0038342
IV. FACILITY DESCRIPTION
A. Industry Description
1. Tempe oflndustry: This facility, which is an active underground coo! mine, was previously permitted to Lodestar Energy,
Inc. After being mined, coal is crushed on the surface then loaded onto trucks. Production varies with demand and can
range from 200, 000 tons/year to 1 million tons/year.
2. Sources to the Treatment Plant: Stormwater surface runoff goes to a sedimentation pond, then is discharged through
outfa11001. Mine water is pumped to the surface and discharged through outfa11002.
3. Chemicals Used: The permittee did not sped any chemicals for use in waters that maybe discharged. On this basis,
no chemicals are approved under this permit. Prior to use of any applicable chemical, the permittee must submit a
request for approval that includes the most current Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for that chemical. Until
approved, use of any chemical in waters that may be discharged could result in a discharge of pollutants not authorized
under the permit. Also see Part ILA.1. of the permit.
B. Wastewater Treatment Description
The wastewater treatment system has not changed since the previous permit.
Pursuant to the authority ofArticle 9, Title 25, Regulations for the Certification of Water Treatment Plant and Wastewater
Treatment Plant Operators, this facility will require a certified operator.
IV. PERFORMANCE HISTORY
A. Monitoring Data
1, Discharge Monitoring Reports: Outfa11001 (surface runoff water) discharged only during the third quarter of 2001 and
only one sample result was reported. TSS was exceeded in that one sample. Table V-1 summarizes the effluent data
reported on the quarterly Discharge Monitoring Reports (DMRs) for outfal! 002 from Apri12002 through March 2004.
E uentFlow 7 0.0074/0.003/0.015 0.77/0.075/0.275 NA/NA 0
H (su) 7 7.8/7.4/8.2 8.3/8/8.6 6.5/9 0
Fe, Tot u /[) 7 719/10/280 139/20/280 3500/7000 0
TSS m /l 7 II/<S/30 IS/<S/47 35/70 0
Oil and Grease 7 NA/NA/NA NV/NV/NV NA/10 0
TDS(m /I) 7 1596/14/0/1859 1634/1410/2022 NA/NA 0
WET, acute
Cerioda hnia 7 NA/NA/NA >100/>100/>100 NA/>100 0
Fathead Minnows 7 NA/NA/NA >100/>100/>100 NA/>100 0
2. State Sampling: There are no state sampling results available for this facility.
B. Compliance With Terms and Conditions ojPrevious Permit
7. E/Iluent Limitations: The data shown in Table [! 1 indicate that the McClave Canyon Mine facility has maintained
compliance with the previous permit, except for TSS during only discharge at Outfall 001.
2. Other Permit Requirements: The permittee has been in apparent compliance with all other terms and conditions of the
permit.
Last Revised. 6/9/2004
Table V-I - Outfall 002 Discharge Monitoring Report Results
