February 9, 2000
Mr. Don Holmer
CDPHE
Page 2
Harding Lawson Associates
[Roan Creek downstream (ephemeral conditions)], and RC-2 (Roan Creek upstream of confluence with the
Colorado River). Although the original sampling schedule called for more frequent sampling events, these
site have been sampled quarterly since June 1999.
Because discharge from the evaporation pond is no longer a planned part of closure activities at Logan Wash
Mine and DMG has approved the mine's retort closure and reclamation plans, GSHI intends to terminate the
Logan Wash Surface Water Monitoring Program. Shut-in (close the valves) of the retorts is scheduled for
February 2000, in accordance with DMG approval.
The following enclosures are provided for your review:
1. Attachment A: Proposed Closure Plan for the Logan Wash Mine Retorts -Technical Revision No. 2
2. Attachment B: Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology letter dated October 25, 1999
3. Attachment C: Logan Wash Surface Water Monitoring and Data Analysis Plan
4. Attachment D: Logan Wash Surface Water Sampling Results.
GSHI requests CDPHIi's written concurrence in retort closure and termination of the surface-water program
within 30-days. HLA will submit the required documents needed to inactivate the NPDES sampling sites at
Logan Wash Mine in the near future. If you Gave any questions regarding this letter or the Logan Wash Mine
closure, please contact me at 970-242-4749.
Yours very truly,
HARDING LAWSON ASSOCIATES

Bruce D.
