You intend to use water delivered to a recharge pond to wash
sand and gravel that has been mined at your farm located in Sections 25 and 36,
Township 41 North, Range 6 East, NMPM.
Water recharged into your pits is designated to offset well pumping on the farm for the
irrigation of no more than 175 acres. The recharge credit is annually reduced by
evaporative losses from the pond(s). The rate of credit reduction is 2.0 acre-feet per
surface acre of recharge structure.
As I understand your project, you intend to use water from the recharge pit to wash sand
and gravel on site. Most of the water removed from the pit will percolate from the sand
and gravel into the aquifer. However, a portion of the water will remain within the
material. In order to correctly calculate your actual recharge to the aquifer, the area of
sand and gravel storage will be assessed the same evaporative rate as that of the open
water surface, 2.0 acre-feet per acre.
Pursuant to the decree, you are not to remove water from any recharge structure without
measurement of the amount removed. I would encourage you to measure the amount of
water you use for the washing operation in some manner. If you have additional
questions regarding this issue, please contact me.
Sincerely,
Patrick J. McDermott
Water Resources Engineer
cc: WD 20 Commissioner
