with respect to air quality. Its relative remoteness makes
it by far the best wild animal habitat area and, therefore,
the least acceptable from that consideration.
Alternative 4 - Re-open Old Holly Sugar Quarry
Being in the outskirts of Glenwood Springs, this
alternative is ssmply unacceptable from the aesthetic, noise
and local dust elements. It would be the most economical
because haulage would be minimal. It would have the least
affect on wildlife because it is adjacent to habitated
areas.
Adverse Environmental Effects Which Cannot Be Avoided
As has been the case for the past 25 years, the operation
of a limestone quarry at any of the selected sites will
produce some noise (blasting, crusher, truck engines),
introduce some particulate matter into the air (crusher
operation, unpaved haul roads) and result in some degradation
of wildlife habitat.
All these can be minimized by taking such protective
measures as wetting down the haul roads, blasting at the
least disruptive times and closing down operations when the
area becomes winter range for wildlife.
The adverse environmental effects will be less by
relocating the quarry operation from its present site (2) to
the preferred site (P).
