Section IV
Environmental Consequences
1. Environmental Effects Common to All Three Sites
The environmental effects of the proposed limestone
quarry operation will be equal for all elements except air
quality, wildlife, aestetics and economics. The actual
quarry operations will be the same at whichever site is
selected. The major differences are the varying lengths of
haul roads, whether or not the site can be seen from Glenwood
Springs and surrounding inhabited areas, and the relative
remoteness of the sites. No unacceptable environmental
problems have resulted from the operation of the quarry at
site number 2 over the past 25 years.
Preferred Site (P)
This location is close enough to a paved road to greatly
minimize the introduction of particulates into the ambient
air from the truck traffic. It will have less effect on the
wild animal habitat than either alternatives 2 or 3 because
it is much closer to human habitation and, therefore, less
attractive as wild animal habitat. It is out of sight and
will not mar the natural beauty of the ridge as would alter-
native 2 and 4. The short unpaved truck haul road, with
less than 600 feet verticle drop to a paved road, makes it
much more economically viable than either alterntives 2 and
3.
