The Concept of Degradation
A river system can be in one of three states:
1. Aggradetion
2. Equilibrium
3. Degradation
All river systems are constantly working to reach
equilibrium. In other words, the amount of sediment
into a reach of a river is equal to the amount cap
that reach. Sometimes, changes introduced into a =
can throw off the balance that exiata and cause tt
reseek this theoretical state of equilibrium.
construction of a dam or a lake might cause a is
of equilibrium.
The Big Thompson River in this reach can be conaid
close to equilibrium as is possible in the real worl
no evidence of either aggredation or degradation
reach.
