SHAPING - Ideal shaping after gravel is removed consists of north
and east slopes less than four to one (1L,°), and south and west slopes
less than five to one (I2°). Many areas will not permit this type of
shaping. A two to one slope is the ma~dmum slope £or seeding. Contour
grading and terraces not only conserve moisture, but also provide a site
for trees and shrubs that may enhance the landscape. Scarification after
grading will allow better adherence during top soiling operation.
2. MULCH - A soil mulch of straw or hay applied wittr asphalt to
hold it in place is recommended, or as a substitute, a wood fiber (silvifiber)
applied with a hydro seeder can be used subsequent to broadcast seeding and
soil coverage, Mulching on steep south or west. facing slopes is highly
recommended. Agronomy blankets have been used in Colorado on steep road
cuts and would be beneficial in this case.
3. FERTILIZER - 60 - 80#/acre of both nitrogen and phosphorous are
recommended during seeding.
4. TOP SOIL - All top soil should be composted. 6-8 inches of topsoil
should be distributed over the site after shaping has been done.
Specifics for this site Problems: salinity, high water table
1. Shaping less than 3/1
2. 6 inch top soil distributed over area
3. Fertilize 60-80# of nitrogen and phosphorous at time of seeding
/+. A firm seedbed should be prepared and seed drilled.
SEEDING PATE ~ OF MIXTURE PLS
GRASSES lbs acre lbs acre
Western iJheatgrass 8.0 50~ 4.0
Tall wheatgrass 11.0
Alkali sacaton ,5
30a 3.30
2G~ .1
Seed in late fall before first snow. Fence new seeding to protect, from livestock.
7. Sprinkle, if possible.
Once revegetation is accomplished, proper range management should
be used to maintain or improve the range condition.
