4-109
•
•
•
Cheatgrass is the major graminoid producer (41.4 g/m2). Other
common graminoid producers include: Salina wildrye, galleta grass
H~Qart~a jamea~~, Indian ricegrass, and sand dropseed. Graminoid
production accounts for 70.0 g/m2 or 94 percent of the total.
Forb production is low, averaging 4.7 g/m2. See Table 4.8-11.
Density
Shadscale saltbush is the most abundant shrub in this vegetation
type with a density .of 3,288 shrubs per acre or 71 percent of the
average total shrub density of 4,603 shrubs per acre. Broom snake-
weed was also common with 865 plants per acre. Average height for
all shrubs is 46 centimeters. Average height ranges from 37
centimeters for broom snakeweed to 62 centimeters for big sage-
brush. Shadscale saltbush averages 41 centimeters in height. See
Table 4.8-12.
Diversity
Species richness is very low in the Shadscale Shrubland (index =
6.92). The harsh environment provided by these steep, dry, south-
facing slopes probably reduces the number of species. Equitability
of cover among species was also low (index = 0.61) as most of the
cover is divided among a very few species. See Table 4.8-6.
4.8.10.4 Juniper Woodland
The Juniper Woodland vegetation type occurs through the per-
mit area on the shallow, rocky and dry mountainous terrain.
This vegetation type occurs mainly on the Torriorthent rock
outcrop complex with minor inclusions of the Nihill loam. See
photograph enclosed in this subsection.
