4-107 <br />• 4.8.10.3 Shadscale Shrubland <br />The shadscale Shrubland vegetation type occurs on steep, rocky, <br />south-facing slopes in the Torriorthent rock outcrop complex <br />which is composed of shallow to deep soils interspersed with rock <br />outcrops. See photograph included in this subsection. <br />Cover <br />Twenty plant species including 2 trees, 7 shrubs and subshrubs, <br />7 graminoids, 2 forbs, and 2 succulents were inventoried in the <br />vegetation type. Graminoids with a cover of 31.0 percent are the <br />dominant, followed by shrubs and subshrubs (15.3 percent cover). <br />Forbs are very scarce with 0.3 percent cover. Total vegetation <br />• cover is 47.0 percent. Rock cover is high (27.3 percent} while <br />soil and litter cover are intermediate with 17.5 and 8.3 percent <br />cover, respectively. See Table 4.8-10. <br />Cheatgrass is the dominant graminoid present with 23.5 percent <br />cover, half of the total vegetation cover. Salina wildrye is <br />also a common species (7.3 percent cover), and Indian ricegrass <br />is occasionally present. <br />Shadscale saltbush is the dominant shrub species with 9.8 percent <br />cover. Other common species are broom snakeweed (3.3 percent cover) <br />and shrubby buckwheat Ert~ogonum co2ymboeum (2.0 percent cover). <br />Production <br />• Estimated production for the Shadscale Shrubland ranges from 23.1 <br />g/m2 to 139.6 g/m2 and averages 74.7 g/m2 or 666 pounds per acre. <br />
