CONCLUSIONS
Groundwater appears to be entering the Howardsville Mill tailings, reacting with sulfides to form
acid, and reacting with metalliferous minerals, particularly Zn, and releasing acid and dissolved
metals into the Animas River below the site. Pre-law tailings host wells that have higher
concentrations of metals, but their overall contributions cannot be calculated from the at-hand
information. Tailings that have been deposited under the current permit also are host to
groundwater wells that have elevated metal concentrations, and these appear to have begun releasing
metals and acid after 1985.
cc: Bruce Humphries L,/-Z l6LC&&„, 7-1
Tom Gillis w l ci ftc-,e,,.,,f-i
Jim Pendleton
A:ViOWARDVI.MEM
6
