INPRDDUCTION
Between August 25 and September 6, 1980, intensive mitigative efforts
were conducted by Nickens and Associates of Nbntrose, Colorado, at
archaeological site SKC139, located in Itoutt County, Colorado (Map 1).
These activities were undertaken in the face of impending destruction
through topsoil removal on land previously leased for coal mining by
Seneca Coals, Ltd., Denver, Colorado (Fig. 1). Prior to the involvanent
of Nickens and Associates, a Proposed Sampling Program had been agreed
upon by the Colorado State Historic Preservation Officer, representatives
of Seneca Coals, Ltd. , and Western C1i].tural Resource P7anaganent, Inc.
(WCRA1). WGRM, a private archaeological consulting firm from Boulder,
Colorado, had performed the original inventory survey and testing of the
site.
• The Proposed Sampling Program is designed to be implemented in three
sequent stages: hand excavation, monitoring of topsoil removal, and
analysis. Specific directives for acaim~lishing these objectives are
stipulated. Expressed concisely, the goals of these activities are to
determine the form and function of the features on the site, radiometri-
tally ascertain the absolute age of these features, provide a better
understanding of site stratigraphy, and gain an insight into the inter-
relationships of artifacts, features, and activities at the site. An
understanding of these interrelationships, when viewed within a regional
perspective, may help in defining a local manifestation of a regionally
widespread cultural c~lex.
This report discusses the procedures cloyed and results or acoumplish-
menu of mitigation efforts at site SP'f139. The manner in which this
information is presented closely parallels the sequence in which the
activities actually took place. This procedure has been adopted so that
• the reader may more easily be able to follaa and understand the line of
1
