0881 N Hwy 285
Monte Vista, CO 81146
\\ September 5, 1986
Mr. John T. Ungefug
117 White Pine Drive
Alamos a, CO 81101
Dear Mr. Ungefug:
Enclosed is information on the plant community and soils around
the existing quarry located in Sec. 19, TLON, R6E, NMPM in Rio Grande
County. This site is an active quarry at the present time.
The present plant community consists mainly of Indian ricegrass,
rabbit brush, sand drop seed and ribes. Other species present include
four wing saltbrush, juniper, scarlet globe mallow, sage, blue grams,
prickly pear, yucca, and squirrel tail.
The following seeding rates and recommendations are made for any
disturbed areas where established vegetation is desired.
Indian Ricegrass 3 lbs/Ac PLS
Western Wheatgrass - Arriba Variety 1.0 lbs/Ac PLS
Streambank Wheatgrass - Sodar Variety 1.5 lbs/Ac PLS
Sand Dropseed 0.1 lbs/Ac PLS
C The above seeding rates are in pounds of pure live seed per acre
but apply only if the seed is planted with a drill. If the seed is
broadcast, double the seeding rates. The seeding s hould be completed
in last fall ,Just prior to fre eze up and snowfall. This will avoid
seed loss to spring winds and alloy new seedling to take full
advantage of winter moisture. If seeding is to be done in spring, it
is recommended that a mulch be considered to increa se su rvival of
the new seeding.
Soils are very shallow over bedrock in much of this area. While
soil depths range from 0 to 16" in many places, the topsoil should be
saved and used for any future reclamation work. The topsoil can be
spread over the quarry floor or other disturbed areas after tl~e rock
has been removed. Side slopes should be no steeper than 3 to 1 and
south facing side slopes should be close to 5 to 1 if possible. For
addition soils information please see the attached soil suitability and
limitation tables.
If fertilization is to be used, a one time application of 18-46-0
will be beneficial. The fertilizer should be applied at a rate of 300
pounds per acre. Barnyard manure will also be very beneficial in
improving the soil and increasing the water holding capacity of the soil.
