Stability Analysis -Elk Creek Refuse Pile
:he stability of the Elk Creek refuse pile has been analyzed using two methods.
Ln each case an angle of internal friction and corresponding safety factor was gen-
erated based on statics. Referencing drawing number C8-1196, results are as
Follows
Method 1 -shown on pages F-40-43, analyzes the potential slip
failure at the contact between the foundation and the
refuse. The safety factor, at a friction angle of 20°,
is 2. 58.
Method 2 -shown on pages F-44, 45, analyzes the potential foun-
dation base failure. A safety factor of 1. 5 is achieved
at a friction angle of 32°.
A sample of the refuse was analyzed for its strength characteristics and results
are shown on page F-39. An actual friction angle of 35.5° was established through
testing, which exceeds the minimum angles calculated in Methods 1 and 2 to achieve
a safety factor of 1. 5.
•
F-38
Rev. 1: 6-18-81
Rev. 3: 3-18-82
Rev. 4: 11-3-82
