additi,~naL e=fort should comprise the Lollowing three goals:
1. Improve knowledge of the tectonics of the Rio Grande
Rift south of San Luis Valley to place the faulting
in perspective relative to the main Rio Grande Rift.
This knowledge will aid in assessing whether this
portion of the rift is anomalous, what typical Rift
earthquakes look Like in terms of magnitude, ssperity
size, stress drop, moment etc.
2
I
f th
k
l
d
f
lt
i
h
l
h
.
mprove
now
e
ge o
e
au
scarp morp
o
o,~y
n t
e
San Luis segment of the Sangre de Cristo foul=. At the
present time too little is known about the fa»Lt scarps
in the vicinity of the project. This knowledge will
' help to determine a) whether the entire segment tends
to rupture at once or whether smaller segment:; rupture
at different times (few Large magnitude event:; or many
smaller magnitude events), b) whether scarp ages can
be more accurately determined and c) whether scarp
heights measured by Kirkham and Rogers are accurate, or
are influenced by thousands of years of erosion.
3. Perform a semi-Markhov probability analysis s)~ecifically
for the Sangre de Cristo fault using data fron 1 and 2
above.
I suggest that the first step be to review published data
related to these three goals. There has been a significant amount
of information published on Rio Grande Rift seismicit}' and
tectonics that I have been unable to review in this slcort period
of time. I am also aware of several theses at the University
of Arizona and Colorado School of Mines that bear dirE~ctly
on the tectonics and Quaternary faulting in San Luis l'a11ey. If
this step provides adequate information for an earthgL~ake hazard
analysis,an analysis will be performed and a report prepared.
If the available literature does not deal with tFe
Quaternary fault geomorphology in sufficient detail tc assess
the possibilities outlined above, I shall recommend a one week
field phase to acquire the necessary information.

11
