t

llb--Evanston shallow Variant sandy clay loam, 10 to 29 percent slopes.
This moderately deep well drained soil is on upland bedrock-controlled
benches and sideslopes. It formed in residuum and from alluvium and
colluvium derived from sandstone. Slopes are plane. Areas are
irregular in shape and are 1 to 58 acres in size. The vegetation
is mainly shrubs, forbs and grasses. Elevation ranges from 6625 to
7200 feet. The average annual precipitation is about 14 inches and
the average annual air temperature is about 42°F.
Typically the surface horizon is brown clay sandy loam about 2
inches thick. The subsoil is light yellowish brown clay loam about
6 inches thick. The substratum is very pale brown clay loam about
16 inches thick which is underlain by a paralithic contact of soft
. calcareous sandstone at a depth of 24 inches. The soil is calcareous
throughout the profile.
Included in mapping is about 10 percent Savage, about 5 percent
Hesperus shallow Variant and about 5 percent soils similar to Evanston
shallow Variant except that they have lighter colors and less organic
matter in the surface soil to a depth of 7 inches.
Permeability of this Evanston shallow Variant is moderate to
moderately slow. Available water capacity is moderate. Effective
rooting depth is 24 inches. Runoff is medium and hazard of erosion
by wind is slight and by water is slight to moderate.
This map unit is used for rangeland and wildlife habitat.
The soils of this map unit provide a fair to good source of topsoil

2-265
