t
ISb--Cochetopa loam, 10 to 29 percent slopes. This deep well drained
soil is on hilly uplands. It formed in alluvium and colluvium derived
from sandstone and shale. Slopes are plane to slightly convex. Areas
are irregular in shape and are 5 to 930 acres in size. The vegetation
is mainly shrubs, forbs and grasses. Elevation ranges from 6900 to
7660 feet. .The average annual precipitation is about 16 inches and
the mean annual air temperature is about 41°F.
Typically the surface is dark grayish brown and grayish brown
loam and clay loam about 21 inches Chick. The subsoil is brown and
dark yellowish brown clay loam about 19 inches thick. The substratum
is light yellowish brown sandy clay loam extending to a depth of greater
. than 60 inches.
Included in mapping is about 10 percent Skylick soils which occurs
in the more convex portions of the topography and about 10 percent
Rhone soils.
Permeability of this Cochetopa soil is moderate to slow. Available
water capacity is moderate to low. Effective rooting depth is 40
inches. Runoff is medium and hazard of wind erosion is slight. The hazard
of water erosion is moderate.
This map unit is used for grazing.
The soils of this map unit provide a good to fair source of topsoil
to an average depth of 27 inches. Clayey textures and firm moist
consistencies in subsurface horizons are the major limiting factors.
Below this depth the soil textures become too clayey to be acceptable
,~ as topdressing medium.
2-278
