It formed in residuum and from colluvium derived from
sandstone. Slopes are plane to slightly convex. This unit is irregular
in shape and is 13 acres in size. The vegetation is mainly shrubs.
Elevation ranges from 6875 to 7000 feet. The average annual
precipitation is about 14 inches and the mean annual temperature is
about 41° P.
Typically the surface is dark grayish brown sandy loam about four
inches thick. The subsoil is brown and dark brown sandy clay loam
about 21 inches thick. The substratum is yellowish brown sandy clay
loam about 8 inches thick. A paralithic contact of weathered sandstone
. occurs at 38 inches.
Included in mapping is about 10 percent Savage and about 10 percent
Coberly Variant soils.
Permeability of this Hesperus shallow Variant soil is moderate
as is the available water capaciy. Effective rooting depth is 38
inches. Runoff is medium and hazard of erosion is slight by water
and moderate by wind.
This map unit is used far grazing.
The soils of this map unit provide a good to fair source of topsoil
to an average depth of 30 inches. The only limitation is moist and
dry consistencies in the lower horizons.
.,
2-:.63
