CUT.OWYO CURL COMPANY
SF.DIMEN'1' POND ANALYSi:S
'I'ele-conference Meeting Notes
Prepnttclliy Tcrr,crt1atriz
March 7, 1997
10:15 ant
Attending:
Lrica Crosby (UMC:) Byrort W;tlkrr (UMG)
Juan Garcia, P.L. (Colowyo) Thomas Leidich, P.E. (1'ernM:Ltrix)
Kevin Kacntttcrrcll, L'.L:. (TernMatrix)
The following issues were disceLSSCCI and/or agreed upon:
The objective of this sediment pond esercisr was to convert the current storage
configuration of tltr sediment pvncls to a treatment configuration. All ponds were
evaluated to Lnake the Permit consistent throughout.
2. It was .suggcstrci that tlLC Colowyo Mittesite not be compared to other mines in the region
for seclintettt control practices, bcaiuse Colowyo pits are large open pia in configuration,
whereas the Seneca and Trapper Minc pits are clvwrL dip resulting in possible pit discharge.
3. Use of bonding maps to assess the worst-case configuration for the ponds is inappropriate
as they assume i00% closure effort. Currently, C;olowyo perforLns phased approaches to
their rcdamation consistent with state-of-the-practice mining technologies.
4. Topsoiled anti seeded acreages LLSed in the analyses of each of the ponds do not match she
annual reelaLttation map or the spoil grading map e{isturhed areas according to Lrica.
Current maps show a total of 600 acres of clisturhance for the F,:ut Pit and the Section 16
Pit. The total topsoiled and seeded watershed area contributing to the Section lli, Streeter,
anti Gulch A ponds is approximately J00 arras. Also the topsoiled and seeded bvunclaries
on the maps vary from pond co pond and do not exactly nmtch the redamation mine plan
according to Map 29 of the Colowyo Permit.
C;LLrrent mining practices include pktased approaclLCS tv reclunation of the final pit
area consistent with other mime .sites. The Pit area is left open to collect disturbed
area runoff without discharging to the sediment control ponds. The spoil piles arc
graded into clte final pit in a jigsaw-like fashion reclaiming arCaS as cllcy :1ChLGYC
final grade. Once the pie is put to final grade ;Lod set to drain, a good poLZion of
the original disturbed area already has 1-2 years vegecLtivc growth on it.
8
~Colotvyu .S.tlimrnc.tinn R,nd Tt~rC'ocr~irrxct Muting Nntn Prrp~nd (ry: KCfC
D:189(\uAporitLrnrt Page l
