April 22, /999 ~ • Page 11
developed from discussions with the BLM, the DMG and American Soda, and are in accordance
with applicable parameters listed in the Colorado Department of Public Health and
Environment-Water Quality Control Commission: Regulation No. 41-Basic Standards for
Ground Water and Regulation No. 31-Basic Standards and Methodologies for Surface Water.
3.3 Groundwater Quality Sample Collection and Frequency
Groundwater sample collection criteria have been established for the baseline data collection
period and the commercial mining operations period. These criteria include sampling frequency and
groundwater pazameters. The parameters that groundwater samples will be collected for include
WQl shown in Table 2 and WQ2 shown in Table 3. Groundwater samples will be collected in
accordance with procedures detailed in Appendix C. The groundwater sampling schedule is
summarized in Table 4.
Table 4. Summary of Groundwater Monitoring Schedule
Baseline Period
(Five quarters prior to During Commercial
Commercial Operations) Operations
In-panel Wells
Monthly (WQ2)
Monthly (WQ 1)
Out-of--panel Wells
Domestic Wells
In-panel Dissolution
Surface Water Level
Monthly (WQ2)
Quarterly (for State drinking
water compliance)
Monthly (water level only)
Quarterly (WQ2)
Quarterly (for State drinking
water compliance)
Continuous (water level only)
During the baseline period (five-quarter monitoring period) all available monitoring wells
will be sampled on a once per month basis. This schedule exceeds (DMG) requirements of eight
baseline measurements in afive-quarter period. During commercial operations, the monitoring
wells located within the active mine panel will be sampled monthly. Monitoring wells located
outside the active mine panel will be sampled quarterly.
The groundwater monitoring wells will be monitored on a once per month basis during the
baseline monitoring period. During these monitoring events, the elevation ofthe groundwater level
will be measured and the well will be sampled for WQl (Table 2) parameters.
