• Mr. Rich Atkinson
September 27, 1982
Page Two
The rock protection proposed for new ditches on Colowyo
mining area will be produced in the process of producing road surfacing
material. Sandstones and red dog varying in size up to four feet in
diameter will be hauled to and placed on the crusher. The crusher
will be equipped with a grizzly having bar spacing between 1~ and 2
feet. The rocks passing through the grizzly will be crushed for rock
surfacing material, and the rocks not passing the grizzly taken off and
placed in a pile. Rock will then be selected from this pile for rock
protection.
The selection will involve choosing sandstone and red dog of
the proper size and suitable quality for the intended use. Shale, flat
slab and any rock appearing unsound will be discarded. The sandstone
and red dog will then be loaded in trucks and taken to its point of use
and dumped adjacent to the ditch cross section to be protected.
The ditch sections through the reclaimed area will be in mined
• overburden materials consisting of an assorted mixture of fines, sands,
gravels, and rocks. This normally provides an adequate filter or base
course for the rock protection. Therefore, a filter or base course con-
sisting of road surfacing gravel will be used only for areas showing
deficiency in this normal gradation. In all other areas the rock pro-
tection placement will be made directly onto the prepared ditch cross
section. The placement will be made by pushing and arranging the rock
with a bulldozer.
The runoff control structures for the Colowyo Mine, including but not limited to,
the Streeter Gulch channel cross section, rock protection and sedimentation pond, have
been designed by or under the direct supervision of a Professional Engineer registered in
the State of Colorado.
Very truly yours,
TIPTON AND KALMBACH, INC.
~l • ~s'Gr y.~~~.Lfi(~
E.
