In1{ _
2.04.11 Fish and Wildlife Information
Information on wildlife resources has been obtained
through observation since 1978; additioaal information and
habitat requirements have been obtained from the Colorado
Division of Wildlife Service (CDOW) and the U. S. Fish and
' Wildlife Service (U$FWS).
Large Mammals:
' Mule Deer: Mule deer are found throughout the per-
mit area which is a summer range. Occasionally deer are
seen during the winter on the permit area; however, the win-
, ter forage is considered inferior to what is found 3-4 miles
to the northeast. Observations through four winters indi-
t Gated there are more deer on the site when the snows are min-
imal. Because deer, unlike elk, do not concentrate in cer-
tain areas to bear their young, no key deer fawning areas are
known to exist; however, the number of does with fawns com-
1
monly observed throughout the early summer in the oak brush
indic ated there is high usage of these areas by the does.
Deer herds using the site and surrounding areas are in good
' condi tion, with a young age structure and good reproduction.
This is especially evident in the fall, when high numbers of

young bucks have been observed.
' Elk: Elk are found only in the higher elevations of
the permit area and are rarely seen from the mining facility.
There are no known elk calving areas around the permit area.
