• in Saskatchewan, Hanna points alone were found in a datable context.
Two radiocarbon dates are available for this site: 2570 BC and 1420 BC
(Neuman 1967:476). Wheeler (1954) feels that the typical Duncan-Hanna
complex dates from roughly 2500 to 850 BC. This is in line with the
range of dates for both types as outlined by Neuman.
98
A third isolated find, Type VA, is morphologically similar to a
projectile from Level 18 at Munmy Cave in northwestern Wyoming. A radio-
carbon assa from this level
y provides a date of 5190 BC (Wedel, Rusted,
and Moss 1968). This projectile was located in Moffat County, somewhat
nearer to Deluge Shelter. If this artifact is related to a site in the
t area, we could assume that some kind of cultural activity was occurring
at this time in the Yampa River basin east of the Dinosaur National Monu-
ment area.
~'
A11 of the Early Middle Prehistoric materials are surface finds and
consequently of somewhat uncertain provenience. Caution should be used
in ascribing the presence of these items to an actual occupation of the
Yampa River basin during this time period.`~However, unless all four of
the specimens were carried in by later aboriginal inhabitants, we are
fairly certain that some kind of activity was occurring in the area by at
~ least 2500 BC, and possibly as early as about 5200 BC.
Site SRT22 is the only site which can be associated with the Early
Middle Prehistoric Period on the basis of information presently available.
Consequently, not much can be said at this time regarding settlement pat-
terns during this time period. This site will be described in detail in
a later section, but deserves some mention here. There are three other
