The rill
and gulley test plot was walked and some minor rilling was noted.
These small channels appear to be "growing over" well with grasses.
In general, the areas that have established a good grass cover appeared
to be in good condition with no significant erosional .features noticed.
The area experienced some heavy rainfalls the week before the survey was
conducted. This rainfall served to show some areas where mitigative
measures could be applied. P&M intends to perform the following measures.
1) The West Ridge ditch will be cleaned. The material removed
from this ditch will be spread on the lower portion of the untopsoiled
portion of West Ridge in order to improve the growth medium. This
activity was started on 5/24/88 and is nearly completed.
2) A small berm will be constructed, using a grader or smaller
dozer, around the upper portion of the small topsoiled patch east of the
pond access road. This berm will serve to shed the runoff from the slope
above the topsoiled patch, This area was fina} seeded last fall. This
berm should only be necessary until sufficient growth has been established
in the area to protect the topsoil. Some minor rilling has occured in
this area. These rills will be repaired and reseeded.
3) As part of last years mitigative work contour furrows were placed
on the lower end of West Ridge through the north part of the old Ramp 6
area. These furrows seemed to work well as baffles. P&M plans to continue
this furrowing process to the south on the lower portions of West Ridge.
In addition small ditches will be used along the slope at approximately
zSo slopes in order to control and spread flows to the West Ridge ditch.
Should you have any questions regarding this report, please call me at
the mine site.
Sincerely,
David Beverlin
Resident Engineer
