~.
March 2=, i~49
Ditisicn of \:ineral and Geology
air. iviiie Long
1313 Sherman St.
Denver CO R0203
Mike:

.:9 ::..
.. 11~ ; GSCI,r:

W ::*.::*n; ~.: egW*ds to a mining pe^nit apphcation for All Rite Paving & Redi Mid on said land in Otero
County, iegal description as, Sec. l & 30, township 23 & 24 S. Range 55 W, 6th Prime Meridian, also
known as 30000 Hwy 194, La Junta CO. 81050.
I live on said Hc:y, within 1 mile of proposed mine site, this Hwy is less than 30 foot wide, with no
shoulder, artd }tas extremely deep drainage ditches on both sides of said Hwy. The drain=ge ditches range
tiem 3 to 6 feet deep on the North side of this Hwy, to 4 and 7 feet deep on the south side of the Hwy. The
Drainage ditch on the south side of this Hwy runs water constantly, as the ditch drains ground water on a
constant basis. The running of Hvs ground water has caused this ditch to slough off in numerous areas, the
water stands approximatrly t foot deep at all times in this ditch. My concern with allowing this mining
permit to be issued, is of public safety. We don't have allot of heavy truck traffic on this Hwy presently, we
do have numerous 6nne[s who move farm machinery up and down this Hwy on a regular basis, as we all
k.^.orc, Euzn equipment is very big in rrattrre and slow moving. When ever someone is trying to move
equipment on this Hwy, they wilt take up the complete Hwy at times, with motorist giving right of way to
said farmers, because getting off of Hwy is impossible. Because of these deep drainage ditches as I
described eazlier. A caz can pull into a driveway and escape this allot easier, than a large commercial vehicle
pulling a railer.
I do not feel that this Hwy, will hold the added weight of the gravel [tucks that wiD transport gravel from
this mine, because of the ground water, and sloughing of the ground next to the Hwy now. We all know
that heavy t:.tcks do allot of damage to roads that aze in good shape, but the road that these trucks will have
to fraud too and from this mute, is in no way, ur good enough shape.
I have neat to my driveway a problem with trees (harsh) growing in the drainage ditch, which I asked the
Stake Hwy dept to remove, when they came out they out dawn thac\e trees end told me that removing theca
trees could possibly weakrn the banks of this Hwy, and rouse damage to the road These trees gmw back
every yeaz, and impair my vision getting on this hwy. I know that as rural as this azea is, these trucks wiIl
be moving along at a fast rate of speed, when going by my drive way. Tlvs will add a very dangerous
sin:atlon tc bet^,:ng on this Hwy.
Theo are nt:meroris other concerns with ether local people in this area, and we de hone that you will
consider oar plea's when making your decision.
Thank ~%cu
~/ f ~~~
Ttny'F.
