BenAo <br />.-u~~ - -- <br />Dravo Corporation, on behalf of Snowmass Coal Co., respectfully requests <br />an exemption from the Colorado Public Utilities Lomnission (P. U. C.) over- <br />head clearance regulation fora new train loading silo. The new coal <br />loading facility is to be located on tha Denver and Rio Grande Western ' <br />Railroad tracks in Garfield County, near Carbondale, Colorado. <br />As shown on attached drawing 346007/C, .rn overhead clearance of 21'-6" <br />will be provided at both openings in th~r silo wall, well in excess of <br />the minimum 18'-0" required by the P.U.C. For safe loading of coal <br />into rail cars, however, two travelling. retractable Loading chutes are <br />required. These chutes will be stored beside the tracks in the silo. <br />To load coal into a train, the chutes will be travelled laterally over <br />the hopper cars, after the locomotives have passed the loadino point. <br />Then the chutes will be extended downward to a position 11'-6" from the <br />top of rails. After the last car is loaded, the chutes will be retracted <br />upward and travelled laterally to clear the way for the next train. The <br />chutes will be electrically interlocked with a visual signal to the loco- <br />motive to indicate when the chutes are either in the stored or loading <br />position. Chute skirting will be attached to the lower lips of the chutes <br />to minimize dust.
