• NE'4 Section 12, TSN, R86W) vas 1.1 km (0.7 miles) downstream of
Station 2 and below all previous coal mining activity.
Sampling at the two stations established on Fish Creek during
the summer of 1980 vas also ceased in 1982. Station 1 (NW'z SE'z
Section 2, TSN, R86W) was located upstream of Energy Tipple No. 3.
Station 2 (NW's NE'Z Section 1, TSN, R86W ) was located 2.4 km (1.5
miles) downstream of Station 1 and below the loadout facility. This
station vas sampled previously in 1975 (Dames and lioore, 1975) and
1979 (ERT/Ecology Consultants, Inc. 1979).
Location and degree of cover of aquatic macrophytes were mapped
in 100m sections at all stations ezcept Station 1 on Biddle Creek,
• where a 50m section was mapped. The Visual Estimate technique vas
used to obtain eztent of coverage.
Benthic invertebrates of Middle Creek and Fish Creek were
collected August 1-2, 1980. Two samples in the riffle sections of
each station were taken with a Subver square-foot bottom sampler
(mesh size 700 um). Pool habitat vas sampled by taking two Elkman
grabs. Each grab vas placed in a sieve bucket (mesh size 250 um)
and rinsed of ezcess silt and debris. Benthic samples were
preserved in the field with 75x ethanol and returned to the Lab
where the organisms were sorted from the debris, identified and
counted. The Shannon-Wiener Diversity Indea (D) vas caluclated for
• the invertebrates using the formula found in Weber (1973).
2.04-92
