• All of the lands in the proposed permit area are Classes V
through VII as shown in Table 38, Land IIse Capabilities Within
the Energy Mo. 3 Mine permit Area.
Major limitations in the proposed mine area which result in
these higher classifications are: (1) limited frost-free
growing season and (2) low precipitation. These limitations
make the lands within the proposed mine area generally unsuited
to intensive cultivation and restrict use largely to pasture
and wildlife habitat. Pasture improvement is impractical on
Class VII lands according to Handbook X210 (IISDA, SCE, 1961).
2. Capability Subclasses - Subclasses are determined by the
• general kind of agricultural limitation: soil characteristics,
erosion, wetness, and climate. Land capability and
productivity within the proposed mine area are limited by soils
characteristics and erosion. Soils limitations generally refer
to shallow, droughty, or stony properties, along with saline
and sodic soils. Characteristics associated with erosion are
soil erodibility, percent slope, rainfall, and runoff factors.
These factors as related to specific soils within the proposed
mine area are found in Table 38, Land IIse Capabilities Within
the proposed Bnergy Mine Mo. 3 Area.
3. Capability_Units - These are groupings of soils that are nearly
• alike in suitability for plant growth and responses to soils
management.
