black and white photographs and waa useful in mapping. Field
reconnaissance on the undisturbed sites provided the photographic
diagnostic data for mapping the premine plant communities on
disturbed areas.
Saisting undisturbed areas which represented premining
vegetative conditions were selected for each of the four vegetation
types based upon aerial photographs, field iaveatigationa of
similarities in general appearance, soils, slope, aspect and
photographic signature. These areas are approximately three acres
in size and were intensively sampled to determine the percent ground
cover, current annual aerial production, shrub density, species
• composition, and species diversity. Field observations and field
data collection were conducted by CYCC in the late summer of 1980.
Tranaects along which random points were sampled for plant
production and cover were 50 meters in length. Percent ground cover
vas determined by placing a 10-point frame along the SOm transect
until 100 data points (plant species, litter, bare ground, rock)
were recorded. The average for each transect was used as one data
point for statistical analysis. Shrub density, (i,e., the number of
stems per unit area) vas calculated using a mZ plot frame. Plant
production was determined from clipping the annual herbaceous growth
in five '~2 quadrats randomly placed along the transect. Plants
were clipped at ground level and oven dried before weighing.
• Weights were recorded by species. Only the aerial portion of the
current annual shrub growth that extended directly above the quadrat
2.04-74
