• The ephemeral discharge from the proposed permit area has been
observed during water sample collection by CYCC personnel during the
1979 and 1980 floe seasons. Flw in the proposed permit area
results from spring anowmelt and occasional rainstorm runoff, where
dry conditions usually predominate.
Seasonal Variations in Water Quality
The description of seasonal variations in surface water quality
is based on grab samples taken by CYCC personnel. All samples were
analyzed according to EPA and ASTM standards. Temperature, pH,
dissolved ozygen, and electrical conductivity were measured in the
field with electrode meters. Grab samples were collected for
analysis of all other parameters listed in Exhibit 15, Hydrologic
Monitoring Flan. The collected data is listed in Table 29, Surface
Water Quality Data. The surface water chemistry shown on Figure 9,
Surface Water Quality Trilinear Diagram, is predominantly calcium
bicarbonate with lesser concentrations of magnesium and sulfate.
Bepreaentative data were assimilated from sites upstream and
downstream from Mine No. 3 on Middle and Fish Creeks to demonstrate
seasonal water quality variations. Seasonal quality variations at
any one sample site were found to be directly related to the amount
sad intensity of flow, as shown in Figure 11, Eunoff vs. slater
Quality. Aa flaw increases, amount of suspended constituents (ie.,
sediment, total iron and total manganese) increases proportionately.
Concentrations of dissolved constituents, on the other hand decrease
• with higher flows due to dilution.
2.04-51
