• permeable layers. The Wadge Seam locally produces water due to
fracture permeability. The strata of ailtstone and sandy shale
betveen the Lennon and Wadge coal seams have sufficient vertical
permeability to transmit water betveen the most conductive layers.
These layers as a whole comprise the overburden aquifer. Although
the thiclmesaes of these layers may vary slightly, the lithology and
hydraulic characteristics of the overburden aquifer are consistent
over the proposed permit and adjacent areas.
The lithology of the unconfined alluvial aquifers in the
proposed permit area is unconsolidated clay and sand, underlain by
Layers of gravel. The thiclmess of the alluvium varies from 8 to 35
feet. These features are show graphically on Map 17, Mine No. 3
• Stream Channel Cross Sections.
Rnow Oses of Ground Water
Groundwater in the proposed permit and adjacent area is used
primarily for agricultural and domestic supply. Some yells are used
for small industrial supply, but none for municipal supply. The
water supply yells registered with the Colorado State Engineer's
Office are show on Map 4, Mine No. 3 Hydrology. Aa shown, the
density of private yells in the general area is sparse, due to low
well yields and the rural population.
Aquifer Characteristics
. The overburden aquifer has been tested at several locations in
the proposed permit and adjacent area for yield and hydraulic
2.04-39
