The Yampa Coal Field is a synclinal extension of the
• Washakie-Sand Wash Cultural Basin situated in northwestern Colorado and
south-central Wyoming. The main axis of the basin is highly modified
by numerous smaller anticlines, synclines and faults. The boundary of
the Yampa Coal Field is defined on the east by the Park Range Uplift.
This structural setting is outlined in Figure 1, Geologic Structural
Setting.
Structurally, the proposed permit area is situated along the east flank
of the locally significant Twentymile Park Syncline. In this
location, the syncline trends north-south and is doubly plunging to
form a structural basin northwest of the proposed permit area.
