• cover of aspens or conifers. Herbaceous species and woody plant
communities dominate the lover portion of the basin. Middle Creek
is an intermittent stream according to the definition under Rule
1.04. Most of the stream is affected by agricultural practices such
as irrigation, hay farming and grazing, as well as surface coal
mining activity.
Fish Creek arises in the Dunkley Flat Tops area and flows
northeast into Trout Creek downaCream from the confluence with
Middle Creek. IIpper Fish Creek is also heavily vegetated with
aspens and conifers while lower portions are more seric and support
sagebrush and grasses. Most of Fiah Creek is also affected by
agricultural and some mining activity.
•
Habitat Description
Middle Creek. Middle Creek is a small stream (1.Sm wide) with
low gradient throughout the study area. It flows through a narrow
valley at the former Aquatic Sampling Site #1, having a well-defined
channel and a gradient of 25. Overhanging vegetation, stable
undercut banks and pools provide fish habitat at Chis station.
During summer months, an irrigation diversion just upstream
withdraws a considerable portion of the flow. Substrate at Station
1 is primarily cobble and gravel in the riffle areas with sand and
silt in pools, Below Station 1, Middle Creek flattens out to a low
gradient (0.5-0.65), widely meandering pasture stream. Foidel Creek
• and a small intermittent stream eater Middle Creek upstream of
Station 2, which increases the flow in spring and summer. Lover
2.04-99
