Seeding will take place when soil moisture is adequate for germination and growth or in the
• fall during the dormant season. Typically, the best seeding time for this area is in the mid
to late fall (October and November). During this period, nights are generally cool and the
chances of germination are ]ow until Spring. If seeding were to occur much sooner than this
date, germination would occur but establishment under these conditions would be doubtful
due to the shortness of the remaining growing season. If planting were attempted much
later in the year, reclamation activities could possibly be hampered by early snowfall.
Mid to late Spring, assuming adequate moisture and sufficient snow melt, would be another
time in which seeding could be accomplished. However, this is a more dif5cult season to
predict in terms of proper time to seed and is often inaccessible due to mud. If the site can
be accessed, Spring would also be the optimal time for planting.
The reclaimed areas will be examined at least annually to observe the success of reclamation
efforts. Information derived from these observations will be provided to the CMLRD as it
is completed or in the annual reclamation report.
The Vegetation Map 6, depicts the locations of the various vegetation types in and adjacent
to the Permit area in addition to the reference areas for the dryland and irrigated pasture
vegetation types. As shown on the Vegetation Map, the vast majority of the mine area falls
within the dryland pasture vegetation type.
Reclamation Success Criteria
• The reclamation of disturbed areas and determination of success criteria was revised by
approved TR-21. All data related to the assessment is contained in Exhibit 5. The following
is a summary of the criteria
At the Chimney Rock Mine, three vegetation communities will be reclaimed including
dryland pasture, irrigated pasture, and rangeland/wildlife habitat. The following discussion
provides a description of each community with the revegetation success criteria. The
Vegetation Map (Map 6 of the permit) has been revised to reflect these communities and
Table 10 presents a summary of the revegetation standards.
All data which has been used in this analysis are contained in the appendices of this
document. Data collected during 1990 for the proposed reference areas are presented in
Appendix 1. Data collected on the East Pit reclaimed area during 1988 are contained in
Appendix 2. Additional data collected on the East Pit reclaimed area during 1987 are
contained in Appendix 3. Data collected on the irrigated pasture are contained in
Appendix 4.
2.05-7
