SOIL UNIT ~I6J--NARRACiUINNEP-DAPOIN COMPLEX, 1 TO 15 PERCENT SLOPES
Unit description
This map unit is a complex of very deep, well drained soils on alluvial
fans. Elevation is 7,800 to 8,00 feet. ...
This map unit is 55 percent Narraguinnep clay loam and 30 percent Dapoin
clay loam. The components of this unit are so intricately intermingled
that it was not practical to map the separately at the scale used.
Soil Description
Narraguinnep clay loam
The Narraguinnep soil formed alluvium derived dominantly from shale.
Typically, the surface layer is dark grayish brown clay loam about 6
inches thick. The upper 17 inches of the subsoil is grayish brown clay.
The lower 7 inches is grayish brown clay loam. The substratum to a depth
of 60 inches or more is pale brown clay.
Permeability of the Narraguinnep soil is slow. Available water capacity
is high. The hydrologic group is D. Effective rooting depth is 60 inches
or more. Runoff is very high, and the hazard of water erosion is severe.
Shrink-swell potential is high.
Dapoin clay loam
The Dapoin soil formed in alluvium derived dominantly from shale.
Typically, the surface layer is dark brown clay loam about 4 inches
thick. The next layer is dark grayish brown clay loam about 9 inches
thick., The subsoil is grayish brown clay about 5 inches thick. The
upper 11 inches of the underlying material is light olive brown clay.
The next 3 inches is light brownish gray channery clay loam. The next 6
inches is light brownish gray channery clay, and the next 6 inches is
light yellowish brown clay loam. The lower part to a depth of 60 inches
or more is light gray clay loam.
Permeability of the Dapoin soil is slow. Available water capacity is
high. The hydrologic group is C. Effective rooting depth is 60 inches
or more. Runoff is very high, and the hazard of water erosion is severe.
Shrink-swell potential is moderate to high.
Contrasting Inclusions
Included in this unit is about 5 percent soils with less than 35 percent
clay in the profile on hills, about 5 percent Granath loam on hills, and
5 percent soils with more than 35 percent rock fragments in the profile
on ridges. Granath soils have fine-silty argillic horizons. These
inclusions make up about 15 percent of the map unit. The percentage
varies from one area to another.
Soil Management implications
This unit is used for wildlife habitat and livestock grazing.
Mass movement potential is rated low for this unit because of slope.
-24-
DMO1fIAppl PERgN3 SAN0.STONE
