•
of accumulated sediment. A Universal recording precipitation gage,
installed in February, 1977 will be operated on a continuing basis to
rnonitcr rainfall. The spillway of the lowermost pond will be equipped
with a stilling well and water level recorder to monitor ary overflows
should they occur.
It is proposed that after mining has ceased, that the retention
•
ponds remain in place to form a series of drops in this reach of channel.
The channel trould be reinforced ~•rith heavy riprap where necessary to
prevent scouring of hod and banks. It is believed that the stream will
have begun to adjust itself to a new flow regime by the time mining
activities are terminated. Additional disturbance by removal of the
structures would again disrupt the flow regime causing increases in
sedimentation and changes in channel morphology.
The waste disposal area will be located immediately downstream from
the TLS Bench as shown in Figure 3. This area will contain mine spoils
and stockpiled top soil. P1ine refuse and topsoil embankments ~•rill be
engineered, constructed, and reclaimed in accordance with ~?ESA specifica-
tions (see Leaf, 1977-Appendix III). All surface runoff from these
embankments will be routed through the sediment retention ponds. The
ponds will be cleaned as needed to ensure adequate storage capacity.
Sediment removed from these ponds will be trucked back to the waste dis-
posal area, and used in mine-reclamation activities. The configuration
of spoils placement during phase I will be approximately as shown in
Figure 4-1 "Starter Embankment."
•
