As you know FW-1 contains only
water pumped from the North Fork of the Gunnison River through the Raw Water Intake
Gallery; no stormwater runoff is directed to the pond.
An 8-inch victaulic pipe was installed through the concrete headwall located in the emergency
spillway. An anti-seep collar was placed azound the pipe to ensure that the pipe will not leak.
The pipe was designed to accommodate occasional overflow water from overfilling FW-1 with
water from the North Fork. In the event of larger flows, the open channel emergency spillway
will continue to function as designed.
A transducer cable will then be installed in the pipe and attached to a 950 Sigma Flowmeter,
similaz to the flowmeters located at the Lone Pine Pipeline and sediment pond SG-l . The
continuous flowmeter will measure return flows to the North Fork, which will assist us in
calculating the West Elk Mine's depletion volume for our North Fork Augmentation Plan.
Please contact me if the Division requires additional information.
istine E.
Environmental
cc: Henry Barbe
Phil Schmidt
dmg071399.doc
