Dept. ai Natural Resources
Enclosed are three copies of revised drawings related to Industrial
Resources, Inc.'s Pilot Solution Mining Project. These drawings depict design
modifications to the evaporation ponds and salt handling area per the request of
BLM. These modifications include:
1. Evaporation Pond - Incorporation of a pond liner leak
detection system beneath the hypolon pond liner. The
proposed design basically duplicates that used by Rio Blanco
Shale Oil Company at Tract Ca except that a 20 mill PVC
synthetic liner is used rather than a clay liner. The
unavailability of suitable clay materials near the site
necessitated the use of a PVC underliner.
Salt Handling Area - The entire area where sodium
bicarbonate is loaded into trucks is underlain with a
four-inch-thick (minimum) asphalt or concrete pad. The pad
is sloped toward its perimeter where precipitation runoff
(potentially salt laden) is intercepted by lined ditches and
subsequently is directed to the evaporation pond. This
provision is intended to prevent salt contamination of
shallow aquifers which could have otherwise occurred.
We are still in the process of compiling rock mechanics information
obtained from testing of core samples extracted during this summer's drilling
program. We apologize for the delay in getting this information to you. Our
current projections are to supply this data sometime during the week of November
27, 1983.
A Subsidiary oe The Cleveland-Ci11r"fs lion Company
BIB TAUGHENBAUGH BLI/0.
