FISH CREEK ALLUVIAL VALLEY FLOOR SOIL INVESTIGATION
OVERVIEW
An alluvial valley floor ("AVF") soil investigation was conducted along Fish
Creek for the Twentymile Coal Company ("TMCC") in Routt County,
Colorado. Kenneth E. Carlson, Certified Professional Soil Scientist (#2824),
conducted this soil investigation on July 17, 2001. Findings of this
investigation will be used to support TMCC's permitting of a proposed access
road to a vent shaft. Soil descriptions were recorded from 3 soil pits located
I along the proposed road corridor within the previously delineated Fish Creek
AVF. The soil pits were located in Township 5 North, Range 86 West,
Section 17 (Exhibit 1). This soil investigation meets the AVF requirements
contained in Section 2.06.8 of the Regulations of the Colorado Mined Land
Reclamation Board for Coal Mining.
SOIL PIT LOCATIONS
Three soil pits were located and excavated with a backhoe along the proposed
' vent shaft access road corridor (Exhibit 1). Each soil pit was placed within the
previously delineated Fish Creek AVF at locations that best represent the
variable conditions along the access road corridor within the AVF. Soil pits
• #1 and #2 were excavated to the groundwater table. Soil pit #3 was excavated
to the limit of the backhoe and did not encounter any groundwater. The soil
pits were located in the southeast 1/4 of Section 17 (Exhibit 1).
SOIL DESCRIPTIONS
I Each soil pit was described by horizon following accepted soil survey
procedures for the following parameters: horizon depth; field texture;
Munsell color (matrix and mottles); root presence and depth; soil structure;
and depth of ground water table. Additional soil descriptions were recorded
as needed. Photographs were taken of each pit and the general site after
characterization. Major soil horizons are marked with orange markers along
I a tape in each photograph. The soil descriptions and photographs for each
soil pit are contained Appendix 1.
I SOIL TAXONOMY
' Preliminary soil maps from the unpublished United States Department of
Agriculture Natural Resource Conservation Service ("NRCS") Soil Survey
for Routt County were reviewed to determine the soil mapping unit
boundaries for the study area (Exhibit 2). Soil pits #1 and #2 were located
1 within the Slocum loam, 0-5 percent slopes, map unit 56A. Soil pit #3 was
• located within the Binco silty clay loam, 3-12 percent slopes, map unit C10.
1
