~M <br />SALINE OR ALKALINE TOLERANT GRASSES <br />-2- <br />CANADA WILDRYE <br />Elymus canadensis. Cool season grass, performing well on sandy soils where moisture <br />is adequate. Good salt-tolerance. <br />~~ CRESTED WHEATGRASS <br />Agropyron desertorum, A. cristatum. Adapted to moderately alkaline soils under dryland <br />conditions. Fairway is slightly more salt tolerant. Excellent early spring forage. <br />Variety: Nordan, Fairway, Rutf, Ephraim, Summit, Hycrest <br />f~~ INLAND SALTGRASS <br />\~`~'~} Distichlis stricia. Warm season, rhizomatous grass that tolerates high salinity, even on <br />crusted flats. Prefers sites with high water tables. Occasionally available commercially. <br />PERENNIAL RYEGRASS <br />Lolium perenne. Rapid-developing, short-lived perennial bunchgrass. Moderately alka- <br />line tolerant. Requires over 20" annual precipitation. <br />n~~.~j RUSSIAN WILDRYE <br />V r~-l1j Elymus junceus. Tall bunchgrass, cold and drought tolerant. Shows high tolerance to <br />salts. Excellent for fall grazing. <br />Variety: Vinall, Sawki, Bozoisky <br />STREAMBANK WHEATGRASS <br />Agropyron riparium. Drought tolerant, moderately salt tolerant sod-former, preferring <br />well-drained soils. Relatively unpalatable. Outstanding soil stabilizer. <br />Variety: Sodar <br />TALL FESCUE <br />Festuca arundinacea. Vigorous perennial bunchgrass, tolerant of wide range of soil <br />conditions. Fair tolerance to heat and drought. Moderately winter hardy. <br />Variety: Alta, Fawn, Kentucky 31 <br />TALL WHEATGRASS <br />Agropyron elongatum. Very tall, erect bunchgrass with fair drought tolerance. One of <br />the most alkali/salt tolerant of all cultivated grasses. Performs very well under irrigation <br />or subirrigation for forage production. <br />Variety: Alkar, Jose <br />WESTERN WHEATGRASS <br />Agropyron smithii. Rhizomatous grass with excellent salt tolerance, drought tolerant <br />once established. Tolerates spring flooding, and moderately acid conditions.
