DATA SOURCES
Mine Maos
A number of old mines have been worked in the Sopris,
U. Starkville and Lower Starkville Seams. Some of these maps
contained seam thickness and lithologic data that proved highly
valuable to depositional modeling and resultant seam isopach maps
used to estimate reserves.
Diligent effort was used to locate maps and determine the seam(s)
worked in each mine. The maps have been correlated on the basis
of elevations and seam conditions with, or in contrast, to one
another and available drill and outcrop data. We believe that we
have the best possible correlataion of seams mined, extent of
mining. and reliability of seam thickness and lithologic data.
Nevertheless, we are aware that available maps da not cover all
of the workings in the Lower Starkville Seam on the A.P. Green,
Griswold and Sundance tracts, These problems will be discussed
in a subsequent section of this report.
Drill Data
Exploratory drilling in the immediate area has been undertaken by
no fewer than six companies over seven decades. Although two
companies, A. P. Green Refractories and Harbison-Walker, explored
~~ for clay deposits, the holes provided valuable data on same coal
seams. Most of the holes were drilled from the surface; however,
a few hales drilled by the old Colorado Fuel ~ Iron Company
fCF&I) were drilled within the old Starkville mine. These holes
were drilled from Upper Starkville Seam works downward to the
Lower Starkville and Piedmont Seams and upwards, occasionally, to
the Sopris Seam.
Additional holes were drilled in the 1970's by A.T. Massey Coal
Company and Louisiana Land and Exploration Company. Most
recently, Sundance Coal Company completed nine holes relative to
the Raton Creek Nn.l A1inc and three hol es rel ati Ve to the Raton Crrck No.? hlinc
reserves. For convenience, the holes were designated with the
pref 3 x AM for Rmon Creek No, t Mine and HM f Or Raton Creek No.2 A1iite More holes are
planned in December 1983 in respect to the Helen II strip
reserve.
Coal quality and washability data are limited to the recent
Sundance Coal G`ompany holes. Coal analyses instructions were
varied to reflect whether the seams were expected to be surface
mined or deep mined. Despite the new drilling, data on minable
seams is not abundant.
Mines/Outcrop Data
In addition to data extracted from old mine maps, measurements
have been made in safe areas of old works and in the new mine.
82 Revised 5/93
