Small Mammals
•
Small rodents and shrews that are probably residents of the permit and
adjacent area include Masked Shrew (Sorex cinereus), Wandering Shrew
(Sorex vagrans}, Least Chipmunk (Eutamias minimus), Northern Pocket
Gopher (Thomomys talpoides), Deer Moue (Peromyscus maniculatus),
Bushy-tailed Woodrat (Neotoma cinerea), Long-tailed Vole (Microtus
longicaudus), Western Jumping Mouse (ZdpuS princeps).
Birds
Raptors
Predatory birds expected to occur in the permit and adjacent areas along
the North Fork of the Gunnison River include Turkey Vulture (Cathartes
aura), Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo
jamaicensis), Marsh Hawk (Circus c ay neus), Goshawk (Accipiter entilis),
• Cooper's Hawk (Accipiter cooperi), Prairie Falcon (Falco mexicanus},
Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginiana}, Pygmy Owl (Glaucidium gnoma), and
Bald Eagle (Heliaeetus leucocephalus). Because of the steep slopes
associated with the North Fork of the Gunnison, predatory birds can
expect to be seen throughout the valley.
Game Birds
Game birds likely to occur regularly on the permit and adjacent areas
are the Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura) and the Blue Grouse
(Dendragapus obscurus). The Blue Grouse would be near the lower limits
of the elevation range, but the mixture of aspen, conifers and oak brush
is desirable. Ban-tailed Pigeons (Columba fasciata) may also occur,
based on the abundance of oaks, but studies in the adjacent area have
not revealed their presence.
•
2.04-4B
