The average number of days between the last spring occurrence and the
• first fall occurrence of a freezing temperature of 32° Farenheit is 138
days at Paonia.
Wind. The east-west orientation of the north fork of the Gunnison River
valley is conducive to easterly downslope breezes during nighttime ~~ours
and stronger westerly upslope winds during the day. Local terrain has
the effect of shielding the valley with respect to surface air motion,
and consequently, calm or near calm conditions are common, especially at
night and in early morning.
Ordinarily, local influence are caused by the valleys of tributaries to
the North Fork of the Gunnison River, although drainage air flows down
these smaller valleys are typically only 100 to 200 feet deep. The
existence of stable layers is most common from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 a.m.,
followed by upslope or westerly winds through about 6:00 p.m. The
gradient westerly winds have higher velocities than the drainage winds
• and are associated with neutral or unstable conditions. In the
transitional period between stable and neutral or unstable conditions,
surface winds tend to be light and variable.
A wind rose was developed for the Mt. Gunnison Mine Site by Atlantic
Richfield Company. This wind data is presented as Figure 3, Annual Wind
Frequency-Wind Rose for the Mt. Gunnison Mine Site.
•
2.04-37
