E)ffIIBIT II.2-2
•l / SEDIMENT POND DESIGN FOR THE PROPOSED NEW ELK MINE WASTE DUMP
INTRODUCTION
As part of the coal development activities at the New Elk Mine. Wyoming Fuel
Company (WFC) plans to dispose of wastes in a small drainage basin to the
north of the exist?~^ ~l•^~ ;:__'~~ ~,°~! of Hallow Ftll technioues. A =chnnatic
representation of the existing drainage basin 1s presented on Figure 1. Under
the current plan, the small pond that exists near the outflow of the watershed
is to be expanded to act as a sedimentation pond for the proposed waste pile.
Disposal will proceed 1n 50 feet fiigh lifts with a face slope of 2H:1V. After
each lift has reached a height of fifty feet. benches of various widths will
::•-
be left before beginning the next lift. The benches will be crowned so as to
cause runoff to occur along gentle slopes to minimize erosion.
The purpose of this report is to present the results of preliminary designs of
' the sedimentation pond and the associated channels necessary to minimize
erosion of the wastes during and after they are placed. To facilitate the
discussion, the report has been divided into the following major sections:
- Sediment Pond Design
- Sizing of Channels
- Conclusions
~~
