• Aerial censuring of big game species was conducted over the Seneca 11-w tie across haulroad
by Peabody Nestern Coal Company in 1979. Flight lines overlapped a large portion of the
proposed loadout permit area, including ell of Sections 13, 14, 23, end 24 in T6N, R88Y.
The censuses were conducted during the mornings of January 30 end 31, and March 14 and 15,
1979, using seven east-west oriented lines spaced at one-half mile intervals.
Approximately 13.5 square miles were flown, using a fixed-wing Cessna 210. Flight speeds
ranged from 80-85 mph et an altitude of between 150 end 300 feet above ground level. No
big game sightings were made within two miles of the loadout area Csee application package
for Permit No. C-82.057 et Volume 6, Tab 11, p. 11 and Exhibit 11-1).
Site reconnaissanee conducted on October 7, 1992 resulted in the observation of
approximately 30 mule deer end one red fox within the permit area. The deer were flushed
from beds located below cutbenks along Dry Creek in the center of the permit area. The fox
was flushed from shrubland habitat near the creek bottom. In addition, numerous northern
pocket gopher diggings were observed along the first terrace of the stream.
Birds. Avian species of possible occurrence in the study area are listed in Table 11-3.
The list was derived from the Colorado Bird Distribution Letilong Study (Chase et. el.,
• 1982), by crass-referencing hebi tat designation in the study with those found in the permit
area. The list is augmented with additional widespread generalists species of likely
occurrence, but which aren't reflected in the letilong study results. The habitat cotles
used from the letilong study were NS (marshes, bogs end wet hummocks), SaRb
(Sagebrush/Rebbitbrush), DS (Greasewood/Sagebrush), end Cr (Croplands).
A Greet Rorned Owl sighting was made at the facility area on October 7, 1992. The bird was
using a crusher tower as a roosting site.
Reptiles and Amphibians. Table 11-4 presents a list of herptiles that could potentially
occur within or adjacent to the loadout permit area. This list was derived from the
Colorado Reptile end Amphibian Distribution Letilong Study (Hammerson end Langlois, 1991),
by cross-referenc(ng l(kely habitats in the study with those found et the loadout area.
Letilong study habitats used includetl SaRb (Sagebrush/Rabbitbrush ), CrS a/Sb
(Greasewood-Saltbrush/Greasewood-Sagebrush), MS (Marshes, Bogs, wet hummocks), and Ag
(Agricultural).
• Fishes and Other Aquatic Organisms. No quantitative studies of fishes were made during the
7
